About Herne Bay

herne bay housesHerne Bay is a distinct community within the city of Canterbury in Kent.

It rose to prominence as a Victorian seaside resort and is still strongly redolent of the typical English seaside town. It boasts

  • The oldest clocktower in England – now undergoing restoration
  • Formerly the second longest pier
  • A two mile curving stretch of beach, complete with beach huts
  • A bandstand and promenade with gardens

It is very close to Whitstable, home of oysters and now much favoured as a weekend retreat from London. Its railway station provides direct trains to London while Canterbury with its cathedral and other historic sites is a short bus ride away.

We are very pleased to be working with a number of local partners including Beach Creative, Vintage Empire Tea Rooms, Furniture by Sue and Herne Bay Town Partners.

Herne Bay clearly has a long standing relationship with radio a this comment suggests

I’m a volunteer at Beach Creative in Herne Bay & thought this may be of interest to you & your project in February
My grandfather ,William Peter Chester was chief electrician at the London Hippodrome & was instrumental in the first live wireless broadcast of a pantomime, Cinderella from the theatre . The Daily Mirror of 13/2/1923 carried the story together with a picture of my grandfather at the transmitting apparatus beneath the stage & a “whole family listening-in eight miles away and hearing perfectly”
I have a framed cutting from the Daily Mirror together with a programme of the pantomime which i will leave at Beach Creative for you to see.
